Annotated Bibliography Assignment

By Kristina Moore, member of the Venetian Project Team

Shakespeare, William. The Merchant of Venice. New York: New American Library, 1998.

This is a version of the play written by William Shakespeare. It was published by New American Library. New American Library belongs to the Penguin group. This publication includes the play by Shakespeare, as well as an introduction, written by Kenneth Myrick and an array of critical essays pertaining to the work. This edition also includes a section about Shakespeare, his life, and his works, as well as a timeline of the dates for which his plays were thought to have been written. The book also includes detailed historical information on stage and screen history, as well as notes and commentaries on the play itself. This play is thought to have been written between 1594 and 1596. The play takes place in Venice, where the young characters in the play go about courting each other and get involved in a contract with the money lender, Shylock. It is in this contractual relationship between Shylock and the indebted Antonio where the climax of the play is reached and is resolved only by the use of disguise to trick those in charge of judging the terms of the contract.  This play is the earliest of Shakespeare’s comedies and unlike a lot of his other plays, a woman is in a place of authority in the lives of the other characters in this play. This makes for a very interesting play, and very popular play on the Elizabethan stage, because of Queen Elizabeth.

2.  Colmo, Christopher. "LAW AND LOVE IN SHAKESPEARE'STHE MERCHANT OF

    ."Oklahoma City University Law Review VL. 26 N. 1. 2001.

    <http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/lpop/etext/okla/colmo26.htm>

     This is a Law Review that was written by Christopher Colmo. This is written to analyze the relationships in “The Merchant of Venice”, written by William Shakespeare. The purpose of the review is to analyze the influence of law in the speech of the characters in “The Merchant of Venice”. It gives particular examples of how certain parts of speech throughout the play are indications that the parts of speech mean more that what one originally thinks when first reading them. He explains how many of the relationships in the play are in fact very much like contracts. Each relationship has terms under which it is upheld. Also he further writes throughout the review that the larger theme in the play involves the characters in the play indebted to one other, in ways that suggest that there is only one pure relationship in the entire play. This is the relationship between Shylock and Tubal, drawn from the fact that the two of them share the same religion. Colmo analyzes different speeches given, by the characters, throughout the play. He does this in order to use them to support his overall thesis that real love does not exist in “The Merchant of Venice,” but instead each of the characters have relationships that feed off the other in order to get what they want. His in depth analysis of character dialogue provides for an interesting take on how the relationships in the play could be interpreted.

3. Steinbock, Daniel. “Tag Crowd Beta.” Tag Crowd. 2006. 9 February 2009. <http://tagcrowd.com/>

     Tag Crowd is an application that allows one to enter a body of text, of short to considerable length into a word processor that analyzes the word frequencies to form a “word cloud.” A “word cloud” is a visual depiction of the words in a meaningful way. Tag crowd groups the words into similar categories on the page, as well as having the option to show the number of times it occurs in the text. It also makes the words that appeared more, bigger than the words that appeared less. This sort of word analysis can be very useful for finding meaningful information from the text. By using this tool one does not have to count throughout the text the frequencies of words, but instead can see it in a visual way and from there draw inferences on why some words appear in the text more than others. This tool can also be used to draw ideas for themes and symbols from readings and also to develop paper ideas. Tag crowd also has the ability to analyze URL’s. There is a place on the Tag Crowd upload page where one could paste the URL into the anaysis box and it does a “word cloud” of the website material page. Another cool feature of Tag Crowd is that it can print out the “word clouds” that are made to make for interesting artwork. It may also indicate patterns among the text both from word frequencies and also from groupings of the words. The creator of this tool is Daniel Steinbock, who is a student at Stanford University, in the doctoral program.
