The Little Prince Project
Team Members: Avram-Baer, Christian Borneman, Joanna Macapagal and Courtney Preston
The Little Prince is a world-renowned children’s novella written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and published in 1943. The story’s narrator is an adult pilot who has crashed his plane in the Sahara desert, and it is while he struggles to repair his plane that he encounters the title character, the little prince. The pilot quickly learns that the little prince is from another planet, and that he had been traveling the galaxy. The little prince tells the pilot all about his tiny home planet and all of the interesting and troubled “grown-ups” he has encountered on the various other planets he has visited.
Although it is written in a novelistic style suitably entertaining for children, the book’s deeper and more philosophical messages are also intended for the contemplation of adults. Each character the little prince has met is worthy of deeper analysis, and each provides rich substance for review from a more critical perspective. Therefore, we propose that a close study and analysis of these characters is worthwhile and enlightening because their stories not only teach important lessons to children, but they also provide a basis for profound contemplation of the human psyche.
It is the primary goal of our group’s efforts to produce thorough and comprehensive studies of each character, with an emphasis on some of the psychological disorders that the characters may exhibit. We plan to base our quasi-diagnoses of such disorders on trends that we discover via text-analysis programs online, and the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. It is our hope that the information we find will provide a better understanding of the text, as well as of basic human psychology.
We will incorporate and present our findings through an external website that will be easily accessible to anyone who wants to study this literary work.
